He was born into a family that genuinely believes in the power of prayer, on October 15, 1987, in Cardston, Alberta, to his loving parents Lenora (Ootskaapinaaki) & Sikimoohkitopi Scotty Many Fingers. Luke is also survived by his loving brothers and sisters: Blair (Candace), Nicholas (Nitasha), Paige (Braden) Many Fingers, Brad (Tamara), Darryl Day Chief and their children. Luke also leaves behind his nieces & nephews, whom he loved so much: Latoya (Shoshonie), Nate (Rebecca), Tyleah, Nikesha, Chalaine, Ponnaasii, Aubree, Naatowa’piinikimmyaakii, and the one who made him the greatest uncle, Potai’sohkomapi. Luke was so proud to be the Godfather to nephew & niece Nate (Rebecca) & Nikesha.
Luke, in the traditional Blackfoot way, was close to all his cousins like brothers and sisters, including Casey, Margaret (Chevi) Many Fingers, Trisha Many Fingers, Wyatt Many Fingers, Jonas Soosay, Blaine, Nigel & Nate Crow, Jeff, Cauy, Nolan, Joel Twigg and Tex Red Crow. Luke is also survived by his uncles, Danny & Richard Many Fingers, Lester (Beverley), Marcel (Dora), Chester Twigg, Rob (Rhonda) Crow, Jordan (Susan) Mike, Bill, Clark (Annette), Byron (Michelle) Dexter Bruised Head. Aunties Lisa Twigg, Genevieve Bruised Head, Benita Creighton, Jodie and Jolayne Many Fingers. His numerous cousins on the Twigg & Many Fingers side. Luke is also survived by Paternal Great Aunts & Uncles: Mildred Melting Tallow, Clara (Mike) Sigurdur, Sylvia Tail Feathers, Marie (Don) Shade and Uncle Burton (Virna) Many Fingers — Maternal Great Aunties: Joanne Twigg, Vera Oka, Carolla Bruised Head, and Sadie Wadsworth.
Luke was a loving son, brother, uncle, great uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and the Godfather. He was known for his infectious laughter, kind heart, adventurous spirit, fast cars, genuine friendliness, crazy humour, and a heart of gold (no platinum). Luke received his Blackfoot name Maatai’sohkomaapi (Another Boy), from his late grandma, Mary Twigg, because he was the third grandson from Lenora. When Grandma Mary discovered he was a boy, she immediately called him Maatai’sohkomaapi. Luke’s younger years were spent playing endlessly with his matchbox cars; he also loved swimming with his brothers and parents at Nicholas “Swearing” Pool and playing with his cousins every chance he got. When Blair & Nicholas started playing hockey, Scotty wanted Luke to play hockey too. One day, Scotty brought Luke to skate, but they returned home early because Luke didn’t want to skate. Luke said, “The ice was too slippery.” During those hockey-parent years, Luke made numerous friends with the other children at the rinks. Family outings at that time included Sunday church at St. Martha’s, and then, they were treated to breakfast at Smitty’s. The family also loved watching the Lethbridge Hurricanes, where they would all sit and watch the game, but Luke would be running around on the concourse with his friends. As soon as it was intermission time, Luke would come sit down to watch the Zamboni clean the ice, as he was fascinated by anything with wheels. He then realized that he wanted to become a Zamboni driver when he grew up. Luke always made friends wherever he went.
When Paige was born and brought home, he was in awe of how tiny his baby sister was, who was miraculously born premature, could fit into the palm of your hand. He loved his little sister very much. He was a regular at Aslan Daycare until he attended The Children of St. Martha’s Elementary School in Lethbridge, AB. He then started at Father Leonard Van Tigem for Jr. High. Luke began working at a young age as a teenager living with his grandparents, Herbert & Mary Rose Many Fingers. He became his grandfather’s apprentice, helping him and Uncle Danny with plumbing and heating service calls throughout the homes in Kainai. His grandpa Herbert, taught him the value of hard work, and his grandmother taught him the value of kindness through friendship. He later went to Red Crow Community College, where he excelled in academics and became the top student of his class. In 2006, Luke was chosen to go to Green Bay, Wisconsin, for the American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) gathering, one of his life’s highlights and achievements. Luke was not only a brilliant student but also a socially intelligent individual.
After that, he moved to Calgary to his parents in 2007, where he found employment at The Grey Eagle Casino Kitchen as a line cook and began training to become a Chef. During that time, he would come home talking about the tools he needed for work and the different styles of knives he used. He learned how to cut, slice, chop, and cook in the culinary arts. He then began working at the Mr. Sub in Canyon Meadows, and soon became the manager for that store. Luke shared his love for his family by cooking them delicious meals. In 2009, Luke was hospitalized with a spinal cord injury, and he ended up having emergency surgery, which changed the entire family’s lives forever. Luke faced many challenges that no one could imagine living in his condition. He later moved back to the Blood Reserve with his parents, where he faced substantial challenges due to the lack of support services for people with disabilities on the reserve. Luke met his beautiful wife, Mallory Tallow, in 2016. They spent five beautiful, loving years together. However, the relationship was short-lived as she passed away in 2021 during the pandemic. Luke immensely missed her and always talked much about her to anyone who would listen.
Luke will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Luke was predeceased by his common law wife, Mallory Tallow & unborn child, grandparents Herbert & Mary Rose Many Fingers, Chester Bruised Head & Mary Twigg; Uncle Alvin Twigg; Aunties Tracey & Anita Twigg; Cousins: Willy Many Fingers, Megan Twigg, Ry’anne Bruised Head, Ty Lane Robert Twigg, Leslie Twigg, Aaliyah Day Chief-Hairy Bull and Seth Twigg-First Charger.
