Don is survived by his beloved dog, Carmen; his sisters, Linda and Diane Malesza; his two nephews, Garrett (Katie) Bastian, and Ward (Kim) Bastian; and great-niece, Alexia Bastian. He is also lovingly remembered by his close “dog-loving" friends that were like family to him.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walter (June 2007) and Mary (January 2026).

Don was born on November 10, 1955 in Lethbridge, AB. After graduating from Catholic Central High School in 1973, he moved to Calgary to attend U of C, where he played football and obtained a degree in Economics. He worked for a variety of institutions and businesses over the years, where he made life-long friends.

He was known for his outgoing personality, storytelling, quick-witted humour, belly laughs and enthusiastic hugs. He loved children, dogs, music, books, fishing, travelling, meeting people and learning about their cultures and cuisines. His sense of adventure led him to take Spanish classes so that he could converse with locals when he travelled to Cuba, Mexico, and Central America, where he easily made friends and remained in contact with some.

More importantly, Don had a big heart. He was fiercely loyal to his friends and family and could be counted on to be there when needed. He relished his role as uncle to his nephews as well as the children of friends. He had a positive impact on their lives in countless ways. He gave them the gift of his time and undivided attention. He made them feel seen and important.

When Don became a “dog father” to Carmen, his world expanded in ways he never imagined. The unconditional love of a devoted dog and the genuine friendship of other dog lovers, filled his heart with gratitude. He cherished those connections, especially in the last years with his declining health.

He lived a full life on his terms. He made a difference. He is dearly missed.

A Graveside Service will be held at MOUNTAIN VIEW CEMETERY, 1210 Scenic Drive South, Lethbridge, AB, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 1:00 P.M.
